Amiga 1000 was a true heavyweight when it launched in 1985. With a multi-tasking GUI, 4 channel stereo sound, 880k floppy disks and video modes which some could display 4096 colors at the same, Commodore’s first 16-bit computer was a powerhouse. At 1,295 USD without a monitor, Amiga 1000 was also much more expensive than the Atari ST, its closest rival, which became widely available at the same time. The battle of the 16-bit computers had begun.
