In 1982, David Crane’s platform adventure Pitfall! became a runaway hit and an inspiration for other game developers. The Activision game features 255 levels, or rather screens, which all take only 50 bytes of code thanks to Crane’s clever programming. ⁠

Pitfall! sold over four million copies and was one of the biggest success stories on Atari's 2600 (VCS) console.⁠
