THE STORY
THE STORY
1982–1985: How the COMMODORE 64 conquered the home computer industry
The complete REDO FROM START anthology in one collectible package.
The PIONEER PACK brings together both volumes of REDO FROM START – USA & Japan and Canada & Europe – along with both matching Collector Packs.
Across 832 full-colour pages, developers, publishers, marketers, artists and software pioneers recall the formative years of the COMMODORE 64 and the rapidly emerging computer games industry of the early 1980s.
A total of 64 previously unpublished interviews follow the development of the C64 across four major markets: from the pioneering software scenes of the USA and Japan to the fast-growing industries of Canada and Europe.
An oral history of the COMMODORE pioneers
REDO FROM START is based on a ten-year research project by Italian researcher Andrea Pachetti, who tracked down the programmers, designers, entrepreneurs and publishers behind some of the most memorable software of the early 1980s.
Volume 1 explores the American and Japanese markets, introduced by John Romero and Chris Crawford. Volume 2 moves the story to Canada and Europe, with an introduction by former Zzap!64 editor Gordon Houghton and transitional insights from Jim Sachs and John O’Neill.
An additional feature by former Commodore UK executive David J. Pleasance – “We don’t sell computers, we sell dreams” – examines the bundle strategies that helped transform the C64 from a home computer into a complete entertainment package.
From the first pixels to an international industry
The two volumes capture a period when the rules of the computer games business had yet to be written.
Young programmers experimented with unfamiliar hardware. New publishers appeared almost overnight. Cassettes hissed, floppy drives rattled and small teams created games that would define an entire generation.
From Wizard of Wor, Pitfall!, Ghostbusters, Lode Runner, Choplifter and Forbidden Forest to Paradroid, Uridium, Hunchback, Battle Through Time, Nexus and Psi-Warrior, the books revisit the games, companies and creative ideas that helped establish the COMMODORE 64 as one of the defining computers of the 1980s.
Extensive editorial features, historical images and dedicated industry profiles complement the interviews. The integrated “More Bytes” navigation system connects related stories, background information and further reading throughout both volumes.
With around 1600 historical images, the complete REDO FROM START collection combines oral history, visual documentation and detailed research into one comprehensive portrait of the birth of the C64 era.
